Brun Valley Forest Park

The walk through Brun Valley Forest Park near Rossendale is proper woodland - tall conifers, bracken underfoot, and streams running through the ravine. You're moving through actual forest here, not a manicured country estate, which means it feels a bit wilder than some of Lancashire's other parks.

It's best suited to walkers who want something genuine rather than scenic. The valley itself is the main draw - follow the water down and you'll get a sense of what the area looked like before the mills went in. History buffs will appreciate the industrial heritage scattered about, though it's not sign-posted to death. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after half an hour.

Allow two to three hours for a proper explore. There's no visitor centre or tearoom, so pack a flask and something to eat. The forest is open year-round and free to access, though conditions can be muddy in winter - go in autumn or spring if you want decent ground.
