Roundhill

The walk up Roundhill is straightforward enough - a proper moorland climb just outside Tavistock that rewards you with genuine 360-degree views across Dartmoor. You're not scrambling here, just a steady trudge through bracken and grass to the summit, which sits around 1,400 feet. The views pay dividends, especially on clear days when you can pick out the tors dotting the horizon and, if you're lucky, see right across toward the Tavy valley.

It's the sort of walk that suits families who don't mind a moderate gradient, and serious walkers treating it as a quick morning mission before exploring elsewhere. Allow an hour there and back, maybe two if you fancy a lingering break at the top with a flask. There's something about moorland peaks that makes you want to sit for longer than you planned.

I'd slot this in as a warm-up walk if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - it's quick enough not to eat your whole day, but satisfying enough to feel like proper exercise. Langstone Manor is close by if you're after glamping pods, while Dartmoor National Park itself opens up a hundred other walks once you've got the appetite for it. Spring and autumn are ideal - less likely to arrive at the top wrapped in cloud, and the light sits lower, which makes the views sing a bit more. Summer weekends get busy with tourists, winter can be waterlogged.
