Round Wood

You'll find Round Wood just outside Wallingford, a proper slice of Oxfordshire woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet wander. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - dense enough to feel like proper forest, open enough that you won't feel trapped among the trees.

The woodland is straightforward: footpaths threading through mixed woodland with beech, oak and silver birch depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Autumn's a golden mess of leaves underfoot. Summer is just thick and green. There's nothing flashy here - no visitor centre, no adventure playground, no café selling overpriced coffee. Just trees and paths.

Walkers get the most from Round Wood. It's the kind of place you pop into for an hour or so, not an all-day destination, though longer circuits are possible if you link it with other local routes. Families with older kids who can manage uneven ground will do fine. Toddlers and buggies would struggle. History buffs won't find much - it's nature, not heritage.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Ridgeway View Campsite is closest at just over three miles - and Round Wood makes a pleasant morning or afternoon leg-stretch between bigger attractions. Wallingford itself is worth a morning's poke around. The wood works best as part of a broader Oxfordshire woodland walk rather than a standalone trip, but if you're camping locally and the weather's decent, it's worth your boots.
