Barley Hill

Dense beech woodland carpets this modest hill just outside Wallingford, offering proper countryside walking without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots along the Thames Path. The trees here are magnificent - towering columns that filter sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor, particularly stunning in autumn when the canopy turns copper and gold.

Families with older children will appreciate the network of informal paths that wind through the woods, though pushchair-wielding parents might find the terrain a bit challenging in places. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - acres of off-lead freedom once you're away from the edges. The hill itself isn't particularly high, but you'll get glimpses of the Thames Valley through the trees if you know where to look.

Expect to spend a good hour or two if you're having a proper explore, though you could easily make it a quick half-hour stretch-the-legs stop. No facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and snacks. It's free access as far as I could tell, typical of most Oxfordshire woodland.

Perfect for campers staying at nearby sites like Swiss Farm or Bridge Villa - it's the sort of place that makes a lovely morning walk before heading into Wallingford for supplies. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent walking boots are wise.
