Round Wood

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this lovely woodland just outside Westbury. Round Wood isn't enormous, but it's proper old-growth forest with gnarled trunks and a canopy thick enough to keep you cool on hot summer days.

Families with young children will find it just right for a gentle woodland walk without the drama of getting properly lost. The paths are well-maintained, though they can get muddy after rain, so boots are sensible. You'll spot plenty of wildlife if you're quiet - woodpeckers are common, and there's a good chance of seeing deer early morning or late afternoon.

History buffs might be disappointed as there's not much in the way of ancient monuments or ruins, but walkers who simply enjoy being among trees will love it here. Allow an hour or so to explore the main paths, though you could easily stretch it to a morning with a picnic.

The wood sits conveniently close to several holiday parks, with Brokerswood Holiday Park barely a five-minute walk away. Fairwood Lakes is also within easy reach, making Round Wood a handy spot for families staying locally who want a proper woodland experience without driving miles. It's particularly good for burning off energy before or after a day at nearby attractions.
