Rivox Moor

The walk up Rivox Moor from Moffat is one of those straightforward hill days that rewards you without demanding much in return. You're looking at moorland rather than dramatic peaks - rolling, open country with proper views across Dumfries and Galloway when the weather behaves. The summit itself isn't marked with anything grand, but on a clear day you can see for miles. Allow two to three hours return, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids and anyone after a proper leg-stretcher without the scrambling. The ground underfoot can be boggy in places - Scottish moorland being what it is - so decent boots matter more than technical skill. Early autumn tends to be best, when the midges have calmed down and the heather catches the light.

Moffat itself is your base, and it's well-positioned for a park holiday in the area. Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Howslack Farm caravan site are both within three miles, making this an easy morning or afternoon outing from wherever you're pitched. Riverside Holiday Park, just over four miles away, is another option if you're looking for something slightly further out.

This isn't a destination walk that'll change your life, but it's honest work with genuine reward. The walk takes you away from the town quickly enough, and the views make it worth the effort. You won't find crowds up here.
