River Coquet

The Coquet winds through Northumberland like a proper ribbon of green, and if you're staying near Alnwick, this river is absolutely worth your time. It's not some dramatic mountain stream - instead it's a gentle, meandering waterway that cuts through pastoral countryside, with decent stretches for walking alongside the banks without needing a map or special permission.

You'll see red sandstone cliffs in places, willows hanging over the water, and if you time it right, the occasional heron working the shallows. Walkers love it here because the river valleys offer natural paths with proper scenery - nothing too taxing, just pleasant and varied. Fishermen come for trout and salmon depending on the season. The walk from Alnwick northwards along the Coquet is particularly good, taking you past farmland and small woodland patches.

It's free, obviously - you're walking alongside a river. Allow a couple of hours for a decent stretch, though you could easily spend half a day pottering about. Spring and early summer are best when the water levels are good and the banks burst with wildflowers. Winter can be soggy underfoot.
