Roman Altar found

A Roman altar sitting in the landscape near Alnwick is one of those finds that stops you in your tracks. It's not a grand structure - more a weathered stone block with carved dedications that hint at two thousand years of history. The thing is, you're standing where Roman soldiers once made offerings to their gods, which makes the whole experience rather compelling.

This is genuinely for the history-minded. If you're after dramatic ruins or reconstructed forts, you'll be disappointed. What you get instead is something more intimate - a direct line to the people who occupied this corner of northern England. The altar itself tells a story if you know how to read it, and local information boards help fill in the gaps. Most people spend twenty minutes here, which is about right.

It works well as part of a broader Northumberland archaeology loop rather than a standalone trip. Alnwick is close by, so you can combine it with the castle and town itself. If you're based at Woodland Chase Glamping or Felmoor Country Park - both excellent for longer stays - you could easily fit this into a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Percy Wood Holiday Park is also within easy reach.

Go when the weather's decent. Standing in the rain studying an altar loses its romance fairly quickly. Summer mornings work best, when the light catches the carvings properly and you're not competing with school holidays for space.
