Pease's Park

Pease's Park sits just outside Alnwick and feels like the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's a proper nature reserve - woodland walks, open grassland, the works - rather than a manicured park with flowerbeds. The main draw is the Coquet River running through it, which is genuinely lovely if you time it right and the light's good.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing too technical, and you can spend a solid hour or two here without feeling rushed. The riverside stretches are the best bit - if you're after birds or just a quiet spot to sit with a coffee, this delivers. Parents with younger kids might find it a touch limited unless they're keen on spotting wildlife or want a gentle stroll, but it's nowhere near as demanding as some of the moorland reserves further north.

Timing matters here. Spring and early autumn are proper cracking for walking and wildlife watching. Summer can get a bit muggy in the tree cover.

If you're staying at Coast and Castles Camping just 2.7 miles away, or one of the other parks nearby, Pease's Park makes an easy morning or afternoon out without driving far. It works well as part of a broader Alnwick stay rather than a destination in itself - pair it with the castle or a walk into town and you've got a solid day. Free access, and that's the Northumberland way done properly.
