Rhulen Hill

The walk up Rhulen Hill takes about forty minutes from the car park, and it's one of those peaks that rewards you without demanding much in return. The summit sits at just under 600 metres, high enough to give proper views across the Wye Valley and into the Black Mountains, but not so high that you're gasping for breath the whole way up. The path is well-trodden and manageable for families with older kids, though the final push gets a bit steep and can be muddy after rain.

What makes this one worth the effort is the relative quiet. Unlike some of the better-known peaks around Llandrindod Wells, you won't be queuing shoulder-to-shoulder at the top. On a clear day, the views stretch for miles - you can pick out distant ridges and really get a sense of the landscape rolling away beneath you. It's the sort of walk where you actually notice things: the change in vegetation as you climb, the particular quality of light across the valleys, the occasional sheep giving you the side-eye.

Histor buffs might find the old quarry workings interesting, remnants of when this hillside was put to proper use. The whole outing takes about ninety minutes door-to-door, making it a solid half-day activity without monopolising your entire afternoon.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Fforest Fields or Great House Farm - both excellent bases - this makes a natural morning walk before heading into town for lunch. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's a genuine piece of Mid Wales walking that actually justifies the trip.
