Rhostryfan Station

Former railway platforms make surprisingly good spots for a quiet lunch, and this old station on the defunct Welsh Highland Railway proves the point. What remains is essentially a grass clearing with the old platform edges still visible, plus a few picnic tables scattered about where carriages once waited.

Families staying at nearby Glan Gwna or Bryn Gloch will find it handy for breaking up car journeys - it's just off the main road between Caernarfon and the coast. Kids might enjoy spotting the railway remnants, though there's not much here to hold their attention for long. Dog walkers seem to favour it too, probably because there's decent space to let them run about.

The location works well as a pit stop rather than a destination. You're only ten minutes from Caernarfon's proper attractions, and the setting feels pleasantly rural without being remote. Pack your own supplies though - this isn't the sort of place that comes with facilities or interpretive boards.

Expect to spend maybe thirty minutes here unless you're combining it with a longer walk along the old railway route. It's the kind of spot that's lovely on a sunny day but pretty grim when the Welsh weather turns. Free parking and no admission charges make it worth knowing about, especially if you're touring the area with a boot full of sandwiches.
