Red River Wood

The woodland around Battle is dense and properly atmospheric, and Red River Wood delivers the kind of walk that justifies a morning away from the caravan. Ancient trees crowd the paths here, the ground soft underfoot even in dry spells, and there's that particular Sussex quiet you don't get anywhere else. It's the sort of place where you genuinely lose track of time.

What you're getting is straightforward - a working forest with public access, footpaths threading through. No facilities, no visitor centre, no Instagram moments. Just trees, birdsong, and the occasional surprise clearing. History types will appreciate that this landscape has been managed for centuries, though you won't find plaques or interpretation boards spelling it out. Children under eight might find an hour enough; older kids and proper walkers will easily do two or three hours and still want more.

The wood sits barely a mile from Battle, which is convenient if you're staying at Crowhurst Park or Beaulieu Farm Campsite nearby. Both are close enough that you could do breakfast at the caravan and be under the canopy by mid-morning. It's free to access and works brilliantly as a wet-weather backup if the south coast beaches feel too grim.

Timing matters. Spring is exceptional - bluebells properly cover the forest floor. Autumn's decent too, though it gets muddy fast after rain. Summer can feel airless and buggy in patches. Winter is fine if you're dressed for it, though the paths get slick.

This isn't a day-out destination on its own. It's the kind of walk you slot between other things - before or after Battle town itself, or as a break from the beach routine if you're staying nearby.
