Battle Abbey

The ruins of Battle Abbey sit on the exact spot where William the Conqueror's Normans defeated King Harold's Saxon forces in 1066 - the high altar was built right where Harold fell. Walking the grounds, you're literally standing on one of England's most consequential battlefields, which gives the place a gravity that guidebooks can't quite capture.

What remains are the flint and stone foundations of the abbey church, the gatehouse, and the impressive boundary walls. The scale of the complex becomes clear as you wander - this was built to commemorate a victory that changed the course of British history. There's enough to occupy a serious history enthusiast for a couple of hours, though families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract after the first twenty minutes; there's no interactive museum or reconstructions, just the raw bones of medieval architecture.

Battle town itself is five minutes' walk away, with decent pubs and tea shops if you need a break. The nearby holiday parks - Crowhurst Park is closest at just two miles, with Beech Estate and Seven Acre Woods also within easy striking distance - make it a logical stop if you're basing yourself in the area for a week. Combine it with the coastal towns of Hastings or Rye for a proper East Sussex itinerary.

Essential viewing if 1066 matters to you. Less compelling if medieval ruins leave you cold.
