Senlac Hill

The walk up Senlac Hill from Battle is brief but steep, and honestly, it's worth doing if you're already in the town rather than making a special trip. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no tower, no cafe, no panoramic platform - just open grassland where you can stand and contemplate the fact that in 1066, William the Conqueror and his Norman army beat Harold Godwinson's English forces right here. That's properly significant ground.

On a clear day you get decent views across the Weald, rolling green Sussex countryside stretching away in all directions. It's the historical weight of the place that makes it worthwhile, not the landscape. History enthusiasts will find the location genuinely moving. Kids might manage the walk without complaint, especially if you pitch it as "where the big battle happened", but they'll need entertaining once they reach the top - there's nothing to climb on or explore.

Free to access, and you can walk it in an hour from Battle town centre. Go on a weekday if possible; weekends pull visitors from the nearby abbey site and it gets crowded. The grass can be boggy after rain, so decent footwear matters.

If you're staying at Crowhurst Park or Beech Estate Campsite - both practically on the doorstep - this works as a half-morning outing before exploring Battle itself. Pair it with the Battle Abbey visitor centre down the hill for a more complete picture of what happened here. On its own, Senlac Hill is a bit spare, but combined with the town, it makes sense.
