Priory Saltings Nature Reserve

The salt marshes and tidal creeks around Priory Saltings, just outside Haverfordwest, are the kind of place you either love immediately or walk past without noticing. I fell into the first camp. It's genuinely wild - mudflats, reedbeds, and open water that shift with the tides, attracting everything from curlews to egrets depending on the season. The reserve sits along the Eastern Cleddau estuary, so you're looking at proper tidal landscape rather than manicured nature trails.

This is birdwatcher territory, first and foremost. Spring and autumn migrations are peak time, and if you've got binoculars and patience, you'll see something worth the trip. The walking is straightforward enough - mostly riverside paths and marsh edges - though it's muddy and exposed in places, so good boots matter. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse for a full afternoon; it's very much a "come, observe, move on" sort of place rather than somewhere to picnic for hours.

Free access as far as I can tell, and there's no real infrastructure - no visitor centre or café - which keeps it feeling unspoilt. From any of the nearby campsites (Three Fields is closest at 2 miles), it makes a decent morning walk before heading into Haverfordwest for lunch. Summer's pleasant enough, but autumn migration season is when locals really rate it. Allow 90 minutes to two hours, depending on how seriously you take the bird spotting.
