Hay on wye

The Cleddau estuary at Hay-on-Wye is a proper slice of Pembrokeshire's wilder side - marshland and mudflats that shift with the tides, drawing in wading birds and the odd seal if you're patient enough. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction, which means you won't find a visitor centre or gift shop, just genuine wetland habitat that actually works for wildlife.

Walkers and bird enthusiasts will get the most from it. Bring binoculars, decent boots (it gets squelchy), and time to stand still - the birds won't show themselves if you're crashing about. Low tide is when the mudflats open up properly, revealing more ground to explore and better sightings. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about it, less if you just want a quick look from the main paths.

It's free to access, though parking can be tight near Haverfordwest, which sits about six miles away as the crow flies. The reserve sits well within striking distance of several decent campsites - Three Fields is closest at just over two miles, while Creampots and South Cockett offer more facilities if you're staying put for a few days. If you're camping in Pembrokeshire and want something quieter than the coastal hotspots, this fits the bill nicely. It won't set your heart racing like Pembrokeshire Coast National Park does further south, but it's honest habitat work and worth the detour if you're already in the area.
