Haverfordwest Priory

The ruins of Haverfordwest Priory sit quietly in the town centre, a medieval Augustinian foundation that's been left to the elements for centuries. What remains is modest - crumbling stone walls and archways that give you just enough to piece together what the place once was. It's free to wander round, which means you can pop in for twenty minutes or stay longer depending on how much the history grabs you.

This is really one for people interested in medieval Wales rather than a major crowd-puller. You won't find much in the way of interpretation boards or guides on site, so it helps to do a bit of homework beforehand. That said, standing among the stones does give you a proper sense of how these religious communities shaped the landscape. The stonework visible in the walls shows decent craftsmanship for the period.

If you're camping at Three Fields Campsite, it's practically on your doorstep - just a couple of miles away. Even if you're based further out at Creampots or one of the other parks towards the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Haverfordwest town is worth a morning visit anyway for the castle and high street shops. The priory takes maybe an hour maximum and pairs well with a proper look around town.

Best visited on a quiet weekday morning when you can actually think. Bring a camera if you're into architectural photography - the angles through the ruins catch decent light. Don't expect crowds or facilities, though. This is the real thing - just stones and time.
