Priestgill Head

The walk up Priestgill Head from Moffat is straightforward and rewarding without being punishing. You're looking at roughly two hours return, climbing about 400 metres to reach the 577-metre summit - nothing extreme, but enough to get the blood moving and the views properly earned.

What you get at the top is genuine. On a clear day, the vista sweeps across the Southern Uplands with genuine depth to it. The Lowthers rise to the north, and south you can trace the landscape folding away towards the Solway Firth. It's not dramatic in the Alpine sense, but there's something satisfying about the scale of it - proper open moorland rather than claustrophobic fell walking.

The route itself is accessible for reasonably fit walkers and families with older kids. Younger children might struggle with the duration and gradient, though determined ones manage it fine. The paths are generally well-defined, which helps in mist - and mist comes often enough up here that it's worth checking conditions before you head out.

If you're camping at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's almost on your doorstep - barely four miles away. The walk makes a sensible afternoon outing, leaving morning or evening free for exploring Moffat itself or using Howslack Farm or Riverside Holiday Park as a base for broader Lowlands exploration. It's the sort of hill that justifies itself through the walk rather than any singular feature at the top, which means you'll either find that appealing or slightly underwhelming depending on what you're after.
