Porth-y-nant

The walk up Porth-y-nant isn't what you'd call strenuous, but it rewards effort with proper views across the Lleyn Peninsula. The peak itself sits about 360 metres above sea level - nothing dramatic by Welsh standards, yet the surrounding landscape opens up in a way that makes the climb feel worthwhile.

What you're doing here is straightforward: a steady uphill trudge from the village towards the summit, then standing around taking in the vista. On a clear day you get views sweeping towards Pwllheli and the coast, which is exactly what drew me up there on a Wednesday afternoon when the place was mercifully quiet. The walk takes a couple of hours return if you're moving at a normal pace, though you could stretch it depending on how much time you want to spend just looking around.

This is genuinely best for walkers who know their own fitness and aren't expecting a challenging scramble. Families with young legs can manage it fine in summer conditions, though it's the sort of walk where kids might ask "are we there yet" more than once. The real selling point? Peace. You won't find crowds at the top, and the surrounding farmland feels properly rural - a world away from the busier attractions around Pwllheli.

If you're camping nearby at Gyrn Ddu or one of the other sites dotted around the Lleyn, this makes a solid morning outing before heading down to the coast.
