Pistyll Chapel

Pistyll Chapel sits tucked away in the Gwynedd hills, a proper little medieval gem that most visitors to North Wales completely miss. It's a working church, still in use after centuries, which gives it a genuine quality you don't get at fully-restored heritage sites. The building itself is small and unassuming - whitewashed walls, simple stone construction - but that's rather the point. This is religion without the grandeur.

You'll find it by walking from Pwllheli, which takes a bit of effort but rewards you with genuine solitude and some excellent views across the valley. The chapel sits on a hillside, and the journey gets you away from the caravan parks clustered near Gyrn Ddu Campsite and Aberafon. History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval fabric, though it's the quietness that stays with you rather than any specific architectural flourish.

Allow an hour for the walk and a proper look around. Go during the week if possible - weekends can get a bit busier with other walkers. It's free to visit, as you'd expect, and there's no gift shop or facilities, so come prepared. The nearest facilities and food are back in Pwllheli itself.
