Pilsbury Hill

The walk up Pilsbury Hill rewards you with proper views across the White Peak - that's if you don't mind a bit of a slog. It's a modest summit by Derbyshire standards, but the moorland around Sheen makes it feel more remote than it actually is. You're looking at steep approaches from several directions, with the northern route from near Longnor the most straightforward, though 'straightforward' is relative when you're climbing 400 metres of Pennine upland.

The peak itself is crowned with an Iron Age fort - rough stone ramparts that have weathered millennia, though you'll need to use your imagination to picture the stronghold it once was. From the top, the landscape opens out across rolling moorland and the limestone dales that make this part of Derbyshire so distinctive. On a clear day you can pick out Axe Edge and Chrome Hill to the north.

This is walker territory first and foremost. It's not a five-minute stroll - allow a couple of hours minimum from the village of Sheen, and bring proper boots. The terrain is rough and boggy in places. Families with young kids might find it exhausting for what's essentially an hour at the summit looking at old stones and wide views, but teenagers who like a proper walk will get something from it.

It's free, naturally. If you're camping nearby at somewhere like Bank House Farm or Hartington Hills, it works perfectly as a half-day outing. The weather can turn fast up here, so go early and go prepared.
