Sheen Hill

Standing at 406 metres above sea level, this unassuming Derbyshire summit delivers proper Peak District views without the crowds you'll find on Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The climb from Sheen village is fairly gentle - about an hour's steady walk through limestone country that's typical of this part of the White Peak.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky sections. Keen walkers often use it as a warm-up before tackling the more demanding peaks further north. The summit itself isn't particularly dramatic - just a modest cairn and sweeping views across the Manifold Valley towards Hartington.

What makes it worthwhile is the sense of space you get up here. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Dark Peak moorlands, and the patchwork of dry stone walls below looks like something from a jigsaw puzzle. It's free to access year-round, naturally, though the paths can get properly boggy after rain.

For those staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Longnor or Hartington, it's a decent half-day excursion. Bank House Farm Campsite and Hartington Hills are both well-placed for an early morning ascent before the day gets too warm. Allow two to three hours return from Sheen village, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding limestone dales.
