Pig Hill Wood

Walking into Pig Hill Wood feels like stepping into Lancashire's quieter side. It's a proper woodland escape just outside Garstang - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is increasingly rare. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and the canopy does enough to keep drizzle at bay on damp days.

This is woodland for people who want a genuine walk, not a manicured stroll. Paths wind through mature trees with the sort of dense growth that makes you feel genuinely away from it all. There's no visitor centre, no café, no playground - and that's rather the point. Families with kids who'll actually engage with woodland will find it rewarding; younger children might get restless after 30-45 minutes. Keen walkers and photographers will find more to occupy them, particularly in autumn when the light filters through the canopy at just the right angle.

You're looking at a couple of hours maximum unless you really want to linger. There's no entry fee and no facilities to speak of, so bring water and wear decent boots - the ground gets boggy in places. Several caravan parks sit within striking distance - Claylands is barely a mile away, Orchard Glamping under two and a half miles - making it a solid option for a morning walk during a longer stay in the area.

It won't change your life, but as a no-fuss woodland ramble that justifies getting the car out from your holiday base, it absolutely works.
