Garstang Millennium Green

The Millennium Green sits right on Garstang's doorstep, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's the kind of place you can knock around in for an hour or so without feeling rushed, with paths that meander through grassland and woodland - nothing too taxing, which is exactly what makes it work.

You'll find wildflowers through spring and summer, and there's genuine wildlife spotting potential if you're into that sort of thing. Birds, butterflies, the usual cast of characters. The space was created as a community project around the millennium, and it shows - there's a sense of care about it that you don't always get in these small reserves.

It's ideal for families staying at any of the caravan parks dotted around Garstang - Gibsons Barn and Claylands are practically on your doorstep. A quick walk before or after tea, or somewhere to let the kids burn off energy without driving anywhere. If you're a keen naturalist, you might spend longer here with binoculars and a notebook, though don't expect dramatic rarities.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though details are thin on the ground. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring what you need. The best time is late May through July when the wildflowers are showy and the bird activity picks up. On a grey Lancashire afternoon it can feel a bit flat, but catch it right and it's rather lovely.
