Hazelhead Wood

A proper walk through Lancashire woodland, Hazelhead Wood sits just outside Garstang and delivers exactly what you'd want from a forest ramble - tall trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually feel away from it all. The wood itself is unremarkable in the way most British woodlands are, which is to say it's lovely without being dramatic. You'll find yourself on forest trails with the occasional clearing, birdsong doing its job, and if you time it right in autumn the light through the canopy is worth the trip alone.

This is walker territory, frankly. Dog owners too - there's room to let them off without feeling guilty. Families with young children will get a decent hour or so out of it before the "are we there yet" complaints start. It's free to access and there's no official opening hours to worry about, which is how it should be.

The real value of Hazelhead comes if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Claylands or Gibsons Barn are practically on the doorstep - and need somewhere to stretch your legs without driving twenty minutes. It's not going to be the highlight of your holiday, but it's the kind of place that makes a day feel properly spent. Combine it with a walk around Garstang town itself or a visit to the River Wyre and you've got a solid afternoon sorted. Come in the morning when it's quieter, bring decent shoes, and don't expect Instagram moments.
