Woodacre Great Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist attraction, Woodacre Great Wood sprawls across Lancashire's rolling terrain just outside Garstang. You get mixed woodland here - oak, birch, and conifer blended together - with footpaths threading through the lot. It's the sort of place where you might spot a muntjac deer if you're quiet enough, or at least hear one crashing away through the undergrowth.

The main appeal is straightforward: peace and space. There are no gift shops, no information boards with corporate enthusiasm, just trees and air and the occasional muddy patch to navigate. Walkers will find it worth an hour or so, families with restless children might struggle beyond 45 minutes unless they're properly into climbing over logs and spotting wildlife. The woodland's close enough to Garstang that you could combine it with a browse round the town's antique shops or a decent pub lunch.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Claylands is barely a ten-minute drive away - it's a convenient spot to stretch your legs without heading miles. Gibsons Barn and Orchard Glamping are similarly close. Don't expect dramatic vistas or Instagram moments. What you get instead is quiet woodland walking that feels properly away from things, even though Garstang's right there. It's not the wild forest experience you might get further north, but for a casual few hours it does the job well enough.
