Scorton Lake

The water at Scorton Lake sits surprisingly still most days, ringed by reedy banks and the kind of quiet you don't often find near a town like Garstang. It's a proper local spot - the sort of place where people come to fish, walk the perimeter, or just sit with their thermos and watch for wildlife. Nothing fancy, nothing staged. Just a lake doing what lakes do.

Walkers get the most from it. The footpath around the water takes a decent hour depending on your pace, and it's flat enough that families with younger legs won't struggle. Birdwatchers come here too - you'll spot herons, coots, the usual freshwater crowd. The banks can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter more than trainers.

It's free, and there's no gate to worry about. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when it's quieter and the light's better. Summer weekends see more traffic, but you're never fighting crowds.

If you're based at Claylands Caravan Park - literally less than a mile away - this makes an easy morning walk before heading into Garstang for lunch. Moss Wood and Gibsons Barn are also close enough for a post-breakfast stretch. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a week's walking routine around the area, it's well worth the visit. Honest spot. No pretense.
