Percy Wood

Walking into Percy Wood feels like stepping back into proper woodland - the kind where you can actually lose yourself for an hour without hearing a car. This nature reserve near Chathill is a working wood as much as a wild space, managed for both conservation and timber, which means the paths are decent and the undergrowth doesn't swallow you whole.

The reserve sits on sandstone, which creates surprisingly varied terrain for Northumberland. You'll spot heathland patches between the conifers, occasional glimpses of the coast, and if you're quiet enough, roe deer aren't uncommon. The walking isn't taxing - there are several loop options ranging from a gentle twenty-minute potter to a proper couple of hours if you fancy it. Spring brings bluebells, summer's green and cool, autumn turns it all amber and bronze. Winter can be muddy but rarely impassable.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a break from the beach-and-castle routine if you're camping at Percy Wood Holiday Park or any of the other sites dotted nearby like Doxford Farm or Dunstan Hill. Families with primary-age kids do well here - there's enough space to let them run without losing sight completely, though it's not a playground. Serious walkers might find it a touch tame compared to the Cheviots further inland, but for a morning's woodland amble with decent paths, it's well worth the detour off the A1.
