Peoples Park

The Peoples Park sits just outside Dunstable and feels like one of those local secrets that doesn't get shouted about enough. It's a proper nature reserve where you can actually walk without bumping into crowds of tourists, which is refreshing given how busy the surrounding Chiltern Hills get during school holidays.

The reserve itself spreads across grassland and woodland, with well-marked paths that take you through different habitats. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you'll spot common woodland species and if you're lucky, some of the rarer migrants depending on the season. The walking is gentle rather than challenging, making it ideal if you've got kids who get bored on long hikes. Most people spend between one and two hours here without feeling rushed.

It's free to wander, which is worth knowing when you're budgeting a week away. The nearby Merlin Farm Camping, sat near Whipsnade Zoo and the Chiltern Hills, makes a solid base if you're planning to explore the area properly. From there you're close enough to the Peoples Park for a morning walk without it feeling like a trek, but far enough away that you can do the bigger attractions without backtracking.

Go early or late afternoon if you can - the light's better for photography and you'll have the paths more or less to yourself. Spring and early summer are brilliant for wildflowers, though honestly it's worth a visit any time you fancy a quiet walk that doesn't require booking ahead or paying entrance fees.
