Penmaen

The walk up Penmaen isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. Starting from near Dolgellau, the path climbs through bracken and rough grass, and within a decent morning's hike you're on the summit looking out over the Cader Idris massif to one side and the Mawddach Estuary stretching away to the sea on the other. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the push.

This is proper walker terrain - not a casual stroll, but nothing technical either. You get real mountain views without needing to rope up. Families with kids who can manage a sustained climb will find it rewarding; younger ones or those after gentle woodland walks should look elsewhere. The round trip takes about two to three hours depending on pace.

It's free, naturally - Welsh peaks don't charge. The best approach is from the south, parking near the village and picking up the well-trodden trail. Summer and early autumn are ideal; the path gets boggy after heavy rain, and winter visibility can kill the whole experience.

If you're basing yourself at Llwyn yr Helm just up the road, Penmaen makes a cracking half-day objective. The park sits perfectly for exploring this section of Snowdonia - close enough for an early start, far enough away to feel remote. Combine it with a walk along the estuary or a visit to Dolgellau itself for a proper weekend.
