Pen y Ffordd-goch

The walk up Pen y Ffordd-goch from Bala is straightforward enough, but the view across the Penllyn valley when you reach the top makes the leg work worthwhile. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at roughly 600 metres - so most people will manage the ascent without needing fell experience or technical gear.

The surrounding landscape is proper rolling Welsh hill country: open moorland, scattered sheep, and that particular shade of green you only get in North Wales when the light hits it right. On a clear day the vista stretches far enough to make the effort feel justified. The actual summit is unremarkable - a few cairns, maybe some walkers' graffiti - but that's rarely the point with peaks this size.

Walkers based at Tyn Cornel Camping nearby will find this a good half-day option without needing to trek miles to find a route. Kids aged eight and up should be fine with it, though younger ones might find the bog sections tedious on the way down. Allow two to three hours return depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

There's nothing fancy here - no visitor facilities, no café, no interpretation boards. You come for the walk and the views, not the infrastructure. It's the sort of spot that rewards being visited in decent weather; in drizzle and cloud it becomes significantly less appealing. Worth the detour if you're in the Bala area and have a free afternoon, but not worth planning a whole trip around.
