The shingle beach at Pegwell stretches out grey and vast, backed by a nature reserve that's genuinely worth half a day if you're camping nearby in Birchington. This isn't about manicured paths or visitor centres - it's a proper working wetland where birds actually matter more than people, which means it can feel wonderfully empty even in summer.

What you get is access to shallow pools, reed beds, and open water where waders and wildfowl congregate. Bring binoculars. Spring and autumn migrations are peak times, but winter brings visiting ducks from northern Europe. The shingle itself is free to walk, and the reserve allows you to pick your own route through the better viewing spots. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about birdwatching, or just an hour if you want a bracing walk and a change of air.
