Caesar's Invasion Site

Two thousand years ago, Julius Caesar's legions actually landed on this stretch of Kent coast - and you can still stand where it happened. The invasion site near Birchington is less dramatic than you might expect. There's no grand monument, no reconstructed fort. What you get instead is a modest marker and a fair bit of imagination required, but that's rather the point.

The actual beach where Caesar's forces made landfall is now largely built over, which tells you something about how much the coastline has shifted. What remains is more about the historical significance than the spectacle. You're standing on ground where one of history's most famous military campaigns began - the moment Rome decided Britain was worth conquering. For history buffs, that's properly compelling. For kids expecting sword fights and Roman soldiers, it'll feel a bit thin.

The site itself won't take long. An hour maximum, and that's if you're reading everything available and soaking up the atmosphere. The real value comes from pairing it with the wider story - Richborough Roman Fort inland, or Canterbury's Roman museum both give proper context to what you're looking at here. If you're staying at Birchington Vale or Sandwich Leisure Holiday Park, it's barely a detour and adds a genuine layer to understanding how Britain became part of the Roman world. Worth the walk if you're into that sort of thing. Less so if you're after something your phone will Instagram well.
