Peasholm Island

The walk out to Peasholm Island from Scarborough seafront is half the appeal. You're crossing mudflats and picking your way across rocks, feeling properly adventurous even though you're technically still within spitting distance of the town. Once you reach the island itself, it's a nature reserve that rewards patience more than spectacle - seabirds nesting in the cliffs, wildflowers dotting the rocky outcrops, and on clear days, views back across the bay that make the trek worthwhile.

It's not a manicured attraction with visitor centres or refreshment stalls. You'll find rock pools to investigate, interesting geological formations, and plenty of peace if you time it right and avoid peak season weekends. Birdwatchers will get the most from it - bring binoculars and a decent camera if you're into wildlife photography. Families with younger children might find the approach a bit tedious unless they're genuinely keen on scrambling about, though older kids who like exploring will have a proper adventure.

Timing matters hugely. Check the tides before you head out - getting cut off isn't romantic, it's annoying. Spring and early summer are best for seeing nesting birds without disturbing them. Getting there is straightforward enough from Scarborough town centre, and several caravan parks sit within a few miles - Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club is closest if you're based locally. Allow a couple of hours minimum, including the walk out and back. It's free, and you need decent footwear. This is one for people who actually like nature rather than just Instagram backdrops.
