Peasholm Fort

Standing on the headland just outside Scarborough, Peasholm Fort is a proper slice of Victorian military history that most visitors to the coast completely miss. It's a scheduled ancient monument - basically a 19th-century fortification built to guard against potential invasion - and walking the ramparts gives you a real sense of the paranoia that gripped Britain during the Napoleonic Wars.

What you actually get is earthwork defences, gun emplacements, and enough broken brick to understand how seriously they took coastal defence back then. It's not flashy. There are no reconstructions or interpretive boards spelling everything out for you. That's partly why it works - you feel like an archaeologist picking through the landscape rather than following a theme park script.

Historians and anyone into military archaeology will find it genuinely absorbing. Families might get restless after twenty minutes unless the kids are already fascinated by forts and fortifications. The walk itself is decent - the headland views back towards Scarborough are worth the trip alone, even if the fort itself doesn't grab you.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's little formal infrastructure. Allow an hour if you're taking your time; half that if you're just doing a quick circuit. It sits nicely within a coastal holiday - you can pair it with Scarborough's seafront attractions, and it's close enough to the caravan parks at Cayton Bay and Filey for a morning expedition. Go when the weather's decent; exposed headlands are bleak in the rain.
