Parc Drysgol

Three hundred metres above sea level doesn't sound like much until you're standing on Parc Drysgol's summit, watching the Menai Strait sparkle below. This modest peak sits on Anglesey's southern edge, a proper little climb that rewards walkers with sweeping views across to Snowdonia's giants.

The walk up is fairly gentle - no scrambling required - making it well suited to families with older children who fancy a proper hill walk without the drama. You'll spot Bangor spread out below and, on clear days, the entire spine of the Welsh mountains marching eastward. It's not Snowdon, but then again you won't be fighting crowds for a decent photo either.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from wherever you park below. The paths are straightforward enough, though typical Welsh weather rules apply - waterproofs essential. Best tackled in the morning when the light picks out every ridge and valley.

For families staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Llanberis or Bangor, this makes a cracking half-day adventure. The kids will feel properly accomplished reaching a proper summit, while parents get their walking fix without committing to a full mountain day. Just don't expect cafe facilities at the top.
