Pant Glas Roman Marching Camp

You won't find much more than earthwork impressions and a sense of military purpose out here on the slopes above Garndolbenmaen, but that's rather the point. Pant Glas is a Roman marching camp - the kind of temporary fortification the legions threw up during their conquest of Wales, meant to be dismantled within days or weeks. The ditches and ramparts are still visible if you know what you're looking at, which makes it far more rewarding than it first appears.

The site itself sits in open moorland, accessible on foot from the nearby lanes. There's something properly atmospheric about standing where soldiers stood nearly two thousand years ago, even if the remains are subtle. History buffs will get the most from a visit here - you need the context to appreciate what you're seeing. Casual walkers might find it underwhelming without that archaeological knowledge, though the Gwynedd landscape itself is striking enough to make the trip worthwhile.

Admission is free and unrestricted - it's just land you can access. Allow half an hour to an hour to explore properly, longer if you're keen on photography. Winter can be muddy, so good boots are sensible. The nearest campsite is Ty'n Llan, just over three miles away, making this a solid addition to a week based in one of the local parks. It works well paired with longer walks in the area rather than as a standalone destination.
