Graig-lwyd

A proper little peak that rewards the effort with views across the Glaslyn valley. Standing at 441 metres, Graig-lwyd isn't going to trouble any Munro baggers, but it delivers exactly what you'd hope for from a modest Welsh summit - decent views without the crowds that swarm over Snowdon.

The walk up from Garndolbenmaen village takes about an hour, following rough tracks through typical Gwynedd countryside. It's steep enough to get your heart rate up but nothing too punishing. What makes this climb worthwhile is the panorama from the top - you can see right across to the coast on a clear day, with the Rhinogs rising in the distance.

Families with older children will enjoy this one, though it's probably too much for little legs. The terrain can be boggy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Dog walkers love it up here - plenty of space to let them off the lead once you're away from the sheep.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Beddgelert or Black Rock Sands, this makes a lovely morning walk before the beaches get busy. It's free, naturally, and you can park in Garndolbenmaen village. Allow three hours return, including time to appreciate the views from the top.
