Craig Isallt

Two hours of steady climbing through bracken and heather brings you to the 436-metre summit of this lesser-known Welsh peak, where the views across Cardigan Bay stretch all the way to Ireland on clear days. Craig Isallt sits just west of Garndolbenmaen, making it a proper workout for anyone staying at the holiday parks around Porthmadog and Black Rock Sands.

The path isn't marked on many maps, which keeps the crowds away - a blessing for those who prefer their hills without the weekend throngs you'll find on Snowdon. Experienced walkers will appreciate the challenge of finding the route, though families with young children might find it tough going over the rougher sections.

From the top, you can spot the entire Llyn Peninsula spread below, with Criccieth Castle visible on its rocky outcrop to the south. The descent takes about an hour if you're careful on the loose scree near the top.

Allow half a day for the round trip, and pack waterproofs - the weather changes fast up here. If you're staying at Haven Greenacres or any of the sites near Porthmadog, this makes a cracking alternative to the more touristy peaks. Just don't expect a café at the summit.
