Oude Dam

There's a stretch of water near Oban that locals seem to keep quietly to themselves, and Oude Dam is exactly that sort of place. It's a proper little lake hemmed in by Scottish hills, the kind of spot where you'll hear birdsong properly instead of just noticing the absence of traffic noise.

What you're actually getting here is a peaceful freshwater loch ideal for a walk around the perimeter rather than a dramatic viewpoint or tourist infrastructure. The water reflects whatever sky you've been given that day - sometimes moody grey, sometimes surprisingly blue - and the banks are manageable on foot without needing proper hiking boots. It's the sort of place where an hour passes without you realising, which is either exactly what you want or a sign you should've driven straight on to somewhere with more going on.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet after the initial excitement of spotting a duck wears off. But walkers and anyone after a genuine break from the busy bits of Argyll will rate this. There's no visitor centre, no admission charge, no official anything as far as I can tell - just you and the water.

If you're staying at Argyll Kayaker Cove or Sunnybrae Holiday Park, both within six miles, this makes a decent morning or late-afternoon leg stretch. Go early or late to dodge whatever day-trippers might show up. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. Leave the expectation of 'sights' at the car park.
