An Creachan

An Creachan sits just outside Oban, rising 336 metres above the surrounding countryside. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a satisfying hump with proper panoramic views over Argyll's coast and the islands beyond. The walk from Oban takes roughly forty minutes each way, nothing too taxing, though the final push is moderately steep. You'll pass through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland where the path becomes clearer.

On a clear day the vistas are genuinely worth the effort. The Firth of Lorn spreads out below you, and if visibility's decent you can pick out Mull and Lismore across the water. It's the sort of viewpoint that makes sense as a half-day excursion rather than a full day out - perfect if you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Oban and fancy stretching your legs without committing to a proper mountain walk.

Families with teenagers and regular walkers will find it satisfying. Younger children might find it a bit of a slog, especially if the ground's wet. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top - it's just the hill itself and what you make of it. Free to access, naturally, and you can do it year-round, though spring and early autumn offer the best weather and clearest views. Worth fitting in if you're based at Oban Holiday Park or The Gather - either park is within easy driving distance, and it breaks up a park holiday nicely without eating up an entire day.
