The walk up Ellery Hill rewards you with proper views across Oban and out towards the Firth of Lorn - the sort of vista that justifies the leg work. It's not a massive undertaking, which is exactly why it works so well as a half-day venture from town. You're looking at maybe an hour or so on foot from Oban itself, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath on the steeper bits.

This is the kind of hill that appeals to walkers who don't fancy a full day's expedition but want actual scenery for their effort. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Those after a gentle stroll might find it a touch demanding - the approach has its steep sections. The views themselves sweep across the coast and islands; on a clear day it's genuinely worth the slog.

Free to access, obviously - you're climbing a Scottish hill, not entering a theme park. Time it for late afternoon if you can, when the light softens and the crowds thin out. The ground can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional, they're essential.
