The cave that supposedly sheltered Owain Glyndwr, Wales's last native prince, sits in the Gwynedd hills near Beddgelert - a spot that pulls in serious history buffs and anyone keen on a proper walk with a story attached. The cave itself is modest, frankly. You're not talking Cheddar Gorge drama here - it's a modest opening in the hillside with enough space to poke your head in and feel the weight of medieval legend pressing down on you. The real draw isn't the underground glitz but the hike to get there, winding through farmland and woodland with views that make the trudge worthwhile.

Walkers will appreciate this more than casual tourists. You need decent boots, some navigation sense (it's not signposted to death), and an interest in actually being outside for a couple of hours. Families with young kids might find the journey tougher than the destination, though teenagers who've done their Welsh history homework will get a proper kick out of standing where Glyndwr allegedly hid in the 1400s.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no gift shop, no entrance fee that I can find. It's gloriously uncommercial. If you're camping nearby - Beddgelert Campsite is just 1.4 miles away - this makes a solid half-day outing to combine with other valley walks. Allow three to four hours there and back depending on fitness. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged; these Welsh hillsides turn to mud faster than you'd think.
