Mynydd Oerddwr

Standing at 470 metres, this lesser-known peak offers proper mountain views without the crowds that swarm Snowdon's better-known summits. The walk up from the Beddgelert area takes about two hours each way, following rough paths through typical Welsh moorland - boggy in places, so decent boots are essential.

From the top, you get cracking views across the Snowdonia range, with Snowdon itself dominating the horizon to the northeast. It's the sort of walk that serious hikers will appreciate more than casual day-trippers. The terrain can be challenging, especially in poor weather, and navigation skills come in handy when mist rolls in.

Families with older children who are confident on rough ground will find it manageable, but this isn't one for pushchairs or anyone expecting well-maintained footpaths. The reward is a genuine sense of achievement and some excellent photo opportunities on clear days.

Being just a few miles from Beddgelert makes it a solid addition to a Snowdonia holiday. Several campsites including Cae Du and Beddgelert Campsite provide convenient bases, though none have standout reviews. Allow a full morning or afternoon for the round trip, and check the weather forecast - Welsh mountains can turn nasty quickly.
