Ogof Foel

The walk up Ogof Foel from Harlech is a proper scramble rather than a gentle stroll. This craggy peak sits above the town proper, offering views across Cardigan Bay that genuinely stop you in your tracks - on a clear day you're looking at the Llŷn Peninsula stretching away to your left. The summit itself is modest height-wise, but the scrambling terrain and exposed rock make it feel more substantial than the figures suggest.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a long trek, but it demands a bit of care on loose ground and it's not the place for young children unless you're comfortable with them on rougher terrain. Most people allow an hour return from the trailhead, though that depends on your pace and how many times you stop to admire the view. Spring and early summer are best - the wind can be relentless up there in winter.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Castle View is probably the most convenient at just two miles away, though Min-y-don and Woodlands are equally close - gives you a solid base for combining this walk with Harlech Castle itself, which dominates the landscape below. The peak works as a proper morning outing if you're spending a few days in the area, and it'll take the edge off a caravan holiday without eating your whole day.
