Brwyn Llynau Iron Age Settlement

Stone circles and ancient foundations scatter across this windswept hillside just outside Harlech, marking where Iron Age families once called home over two thousand years ago. The settlement remains are subtle - you'll spot low walls, circular hut bases and what archaeologists reckon were storage pits, all slowly being reclaimed by bracken and sheep.

History buffs will love piecing together how these ancient communities lived, while kids might need a bit more imagination to get excited about what are essentially grassy bumps. The views across to Cardigan Bay are properly spectacular though, making the walk worthwhile even if ancient stones aren't your thing.

Expect to spend about an hour here if you're genuinely interested in the archaeology. There's no visitor centre or guided tour - just you, the ruins and some helpful interpretation boards that explain what you're looking at. Best visited on a clear day when you can see across to the Llyn Peninsula.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Harlech like Woodlands or Castle View, this makes a decent morning's ramble before hitting the beach. Combine it with a trip up to Harlech Castle - now that's something that'll impress the whole family rather more than these humble stone foundations.
