Castell Harlech

The castle sits bang on the Welsh coastline, commanding views across Cardigan Bay that make the climb worthwhile. Castell Harlech is a proper medieval fortress - built in 1283 by Edward I during his conquest of Wales, and it looks every bit the military stronghold you'd expect from that era. The walls are substantial, the towers imposing, and on a clear day you can see all the way out to sea.

What strikes you most is the sheer position of the thing. It's perched on a rocky crag that would have been virtually impregnable in its day. You can walk the ramparts, poke around the towers, and get a genuine sense of why this mattered strategically. The views alone justify the journey - Snowdonia rises inland, the coast stretches north and south, and Harlech town sits below in the valley.

This isn't a place for a quick snap and move on. Serious history enthusiasts will spend a couple of hours properly exploring the structure and imagining medieval life here. Families with older kids will enjoy the scramble up and the fortress atmosphere. Younger children might find it a bit samey after half an hour - there's limited interactive stuff, just honest stonework and views.
