Odda's Chapel

A tiny Saxon church tucked away near Gloucester, Odda's Chapel is one of those quiet discoveries that makes you feel like an archaeologist rather than a tourist. Built in the 11th century, it's barely larger than a cottage - you could practically fit it in a country sitting room - but what it lacks in size it makes up for in historical weight.

The chapel sits on its own, which adds to the oddness of it all. You're standing in front of something that survived the Norman Conquest, the Reformation, and centuries of English weather largely intact. The stonework is genuine Anglo-Saxon work, sturdy and plain, with narrow windows that wouldn't look out of place in a fortress. There's a simple dignity to it.

History enthusiasts will find this properly rewarding. Architecture buffs might spend a good thirty minutes examining the details. Families with young children? Probably best suited to those aged eight and up - it's not a playground, and the appeal lies in understanding what you're looking at rather than doing anything in it.

It's free to access, though do check locally in Gloucester beforehand as opening arrangements can be limited. The walk from nearby Severnside Boat & Caravan Park is straightforward, making it a logical half-hour detour if you're basing yourself at one of the cluster of caravan sites in the area. Allow yourself forty minutes here including standing about thinking about Saxon craftsmen. Worth the diversion, but go in with realistic expectations - you're paying a visit to history, not entertainment.
