Beech Coppice

Ancient beech trees tower overhead here, their smooth grey bark catching the light in a way that makes you forget about the car park for a good ten minutes. Beech Coppice is a proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees and paths and the sort of quiet you don't get often enough. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a trip for.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths meander through the woodland without being demanding, so families with older kids manage fine, though younger ones might find it all a bit samey after half an hour. It's the kind of place where you see what the forest looked like centuries ago - coppiced trees that have been managed this way for generations speak volumes if you pay attention to them.

You're looking at an hour's walk comfortably, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle. It costs nothing. The nearest town is Gloucester, which gives you context for a wider day out - the Severn Valley is lush countryside, and several caravan parks sit within a few miles. Millavon, Dawleys, and Tewkesbury Abbey Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite are all close by, making Beech Coppice a decent addition to a Cotswolds-edge holiday rather than a destination in itself. Go in autumn when the light's low and honeyed, or spring when things are growing again. Winter's muddy but atmospheric.
