Oater's Wood

A proper woodland walk near Petworth, Oater's Wood is the sort of place that creeps up on you - you're wandering through Sussex countryside and suddenly the trees thicken and you're properly into it. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dappled light filters through the canopy, and it feels genuinely quiet in a way that's rarer than it should be.

This is straightforward woodland rambling, nothing fancy. You pick your own route through the trees, following whatever paths appeal to you. It's ideal for anyone wanting to blow off steam between structured attractions - families with restless kids do well here because there's genuine freedom to explore, and walkers passing through the area will find it a decent detour if you've got an hour to spare. The space works because it's not overcomplicated: just trees, air, and the occasional glimpse back towards the rolling hills that define this part of Sussex.

Since it's forest rather than manicured park, expect muddy patches after rain and bring decent boots. There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - no cafe, no visitor centre - so plan accordingly. The nearest town of Petworth is close enough for a lunch stop.

If you're camping at Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Woodfire at Westerlands, Oater's Wood fills a morning nicely without the formality of a ticketed attraction. It's the sort of place where you actually switch off rather than work through a checklist.
